Waters Edge
Tavistock
Nestled on the edge of Dartmoor, Tavistock is perfectly positioned for leisure and recreation time.
This fine and flourishing town with a population of around of 11,000 is well served by a wide selection of schools, shops, bars, restaurants, a cinema, the delightful Pannier Market and all basic amenities. Being located on the edge of Dartmoor, Tavistock is well placed for exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside and the nearby pretty villages of Devon and Eastern Cornwall. It is a short drive from the Devon Expressway and the Gateway to Cornwall.
The town itself is steeped in history, with traces of prehistoric man being discovered in the area; Tavistock was progressively developed in 974 AD around a magnificent Benedictine Abbey, and built at the side of the River Tavy.
Tavistock has long been of continuing importance as a market town for West Devon. A Royal Charter allowing a Pannier Market in the town was granted in 1105 by King Henry I and is still in operation today, being an intrinsic part of the town centre. In the 14th century the main industry for Tavistock was tin mining and in 1305 it was established as a Stannary Town, where miners could have their tin officially assayed before sale.
