A little piece of history...
The name 'Cobham Field' is inspired by the legendary English aviation pioneer Sir Alan Cobham. Cobham's mail flight between Croydon and Chelson Meadow in Plymouth during 1923 not only demonstrated the benefits of transporting mail by air but also inspired Plymouth City Council to look for a permanent site for an airport, a site that they operate from today. Located opposite Cobham Field, Plymouth Airport provides a constant reminder of the role Sir Alan Cobham played in the development of the airport, providing the people of Plymouth with easy access to the rest of the country and beyond.
