Ready, steady, grow! Cavanna's charity battle of the beards begins

22nd October 2009

Things will be getting rather hairy in Torbay over the next few months as male members of staff at Cavanna Homes and their friends prepare to pit their whiskers against each other in the company’s second fundraising Beardathon.

The organiser of the furry face event is David Green, Cavanna’s Senior Planning and Technical Manager, who says the last time they staged a Beardathon two years ago, it resulted in some spectacular displays: “The last Beardathon was in 2007 and we had 20entrants which included most of the men in our company plus a few of our friends. Our overall winner was Production Manager Fred Sureshkumar who produced a truly-awe-inspiring display.

“This year we’re hoping even more would-be beardies are going to join us. Local rugby clubs are pledging support and anyone can take part.

“The last event raised £2,375 for the Wooden Spoon rugby charity. This year we will again be supporting the Wooden Spoon and adding a new charity to the event; Portage in Torbay. Both are very worthwhile children’s charities which offer much appreciated support for youngsters and their families.”
The Wooden Spoon is a national charity founded in 1983 to help underprivileged children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially to live happier, richer lives. Portage is a home teaching service for families in the Torbay area who have pre-school children with special needs.

The 2009 Beardathon at Cavanna Homes will be launched on Monday 26th October when all the entrants will enjoy their last shave, have their photo taken and email the picture in to beardathon2009@cavanna.co.uk. They will spend the next eight weeks nurturing a full beard which must not be shaped or trimmed at all apart from on the neckline. On Thursday 17th December the judging will take place.

David Green added: “The panel of judges will consist of Cavanna Homes staff who have pledged the most money for the privilege, and we anticipate it will be mostly women! We will then invite all our beard growers to take part in one last challenge; fashioning a moustache of their choice from their luxuriant whiskers. This will be judged the following day.”

Entrance to the competition is a minimum donation of £10 and further information is available from David Green at beardathon2009@cavanna.co.uk or on 01803 618688.
