Christmas whiskers raise money for children's charities

A Beardathon contest to nurture the biggest, bushiest and softest beards for Christmas has raised £2000 for Westcountry children’s charities
Over the past eight weeks, male members of staff at Torbay based Cavanna homes, along with their friends, have pitted their whiskers against each other in a battle of the beards to raise money for the Wooden Spoon Charity and for Portage in Torbay.
Winner of the 2009 Beardathon is Darren Goodland, Cavanna Homes Planning and Technical Manager, who beat 42 other entrants. “I think it’s the unusual ginger colour of my beard that gave me the edge over the others. I’ve grown quite fond of it but I’m really looking forward to getting rid of it for Christmas. After all with a beard like this, I could easily be mistaken for Santa!”
Organiser David Green, Cavanna’s Senior Planning and Technical Manager said; “I’m very impressed with the dedication and determination of the entrants to persevere with this charity event. It can be pretty uncomfortable and rather itchy during the early staging of growing a beard, but judging by the quality of beards this year and the amount of money raised, it’s been well worth it!”.
The Wooden Spoon is a national charity founded in 1983 to help underprivileged children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially to live happier, richer lives. Portage is a home teaching service for families in the Torbay area who have pre-school children with special needs.
