Helping to build businesspeople of the future

2nd February 2010

Students from Torbay’s secondary schools will be given a unique insight into the construction industry with the help of the South West’s largest independent homebuilder, Cavanna Homes, as part of the Business, Administration and Finance Diploma which combines classroom theory with practical experience.

The teenagers from Brixham Community College, Torquay Community College and Westlands School will be given an overview of the homebuilding process; learning about land acquisition and planning applications to design, build and sales. They will also spend time with mangers who will illustrate the importance of clear communication and precise timetabling within the construction industry.
Cavanna Homes is one of a number of local and regional businesses to offer courses to students between the ages of 14 and 19 who are studying for a Diploma in Business, Administration and Finance (BAF).  Boots, ROK, The Grosvenor Hotel and McDonald’s are among others who are also offering the placements.
Finance Director Eugene Rapson who is co-ordinating the placements on behalf of Cavanna Homes says; “We are really pleased to have the opportunity to pass on our expertise to young people who are interested in learning more about our industry. As a local business, established in Torbay in 1923, it is very fitting that we should be inspiring the next generation of business people here in Torbay.
“Systems and good communications are essential in construction because the process is so complex. From organising the deliveries of materials to having the right tradesmen on site at the right time through to making sure that houses are built to a high standard, on time and on budget - every little step of the process needs to be planned and executed meticulously,” explains Eugene. He adds; “The programme we provide for the students gives them hands-on experience of organising and communicating. In one task they are asked to book appointments with our managers and interview them with planned and relevant questions.  In another they are asked to analyse anonymous CVs and job applications and decide which candidates they would choose to interview.
Nick Fieldhouse, Head of Business and Enterprise, from Torbay Boys’ Grammar School, who are administering the BAF Diploma course said: “We are thrilled to have Cavanna Homes fully on board with the delivery of this exciting new qualification. Work experience placements are an essential aspect of the successful delivery of the BAF Diploma and we are grateful for the enthusiastic involvement of Cavanna Homes”
